Re: [at-l] smokies weather

Jeff, did you decide on a Spring Break destination yet? The weather in
this area (East TN/West NC) is usually pretty nice by the end of March.
By nice I mean 60 - 70 temps on good days. BUT the weather in the Smokys
is very changeable, esp. at higher elevations, such as on the AT which
runs along the ridge that separates TN and NC. For example, I went on a
3-day-weekend hike starting last Oct 17. The first night is slept in
60-degree temp under a perfectly cloudless, starry sky. The next morning
I awoke to raindrops--the rain fell, and the temp dropped, steadily. By
night the temp was in the 20's and did not get above freezing for days. A
blizzard in early March in the Smokys is not unheard of.

BYW, most locals like me do not frequent the GSMNP during busy times.
There are excellent wilderness areas northeast of the park and vicinity,
with fewer day-use people driving around the roads. One great place
that gets limited use is Big South Fork recreation area, which is
northwest of GSMNP. I would get here, then get connected with the rock
climbers (not me) and find the good spots to climb. I bet many are NOT in
GSMNP. Another is Fall Creek Falls State Park, West of GSMNP.

Have a good trip! TCJ
