Congratulations in yogiing a piece of Tyvek :).
There are three basic flavors of Tyvek: Type 10, Type 14 and Type 16. The Type
16 has microperf holes in it, the Type 10 is stiff (the housewrap) and the
type 14 is softer. None are guaranteed by Dupont to be waterproof. All are
nonwoven fiber.
Try taking a small piece and capturing some water in a "baloon" and squeezing
it. This failed on the piece of housewarp I pulled from a nearby construction
project. The water formed little droplets and leaked through the baloon. I
did not find any stamp or mark on this to tell what type is was. This would
definately have allowed water to come through under the pressures you exert on
a tent floor.
On the Dupont site you can find a page of information about Tyvek in it's
different flavors. There is Tyvek cloth, and Tyvek Paper, along with coated
Tyvek Paper that FedEx envelopes and extreme exposure suits are made from.
None of the Tyvek cloth is classified as waterproof, only water resistant.
Only the coated papers are classified as waterproof.
I have ordered some from Quest Outfitters in Florida. They sell the 1443R
series at $5.25 a yard in 60 inch wide material. Just after I ordered 3 yards,
I found another reference for the material in type 1422R, at $2.50 a yard from
Into the Wind, the kite shop. This is also in 60 inch widths. The Kite Studio
apparently sells this same material. Here is a comparison of the two.
1443R is 1.25 oz/sq yd, 6.3mils thick, tensile strength 9.4
1442R is 1.2 oz/sq yd, 5.3mils thick, tensile strength 7.9
I don't have the specs for type 10 (housewrap?) or 16 (microperfs).
