If there's an outfitter that rents equipment nearly, have her rent an exter=
nal and take a hike, then rent an internal and do same. Make sure the pack=
s are equally well fitted. Then which ever she likes best is the best pack=
. Now, there are arguments about trails vs. climbing, right coast vs. left=
coast and everything else, but above should work if she tests where she is=
going to hike.

My basic reaction is "who cares?" People use both kind. As long as the fi=
t
is right and the capacity is right, who cares.
Everything I have read is that external is better for heavier loads and on
trails. Internals is better for cross country or climbing. There is a
better selction of internal frame packs, but that does not make them right =
or
better, just popular. =
Like you, I use an old Jansport external frame, and it works fine for me. =
