I carry a used military rip-stop nylon pancho that wts 1.5 #. Cost $14.
It serves multi-purposes.
1. Covers my pack in rain.
2. Ground cloth for my tent.
3. Can be used as tarp
4. Excellent emergency shelter- find a small tree your height. Use as   
center
   pole. Tie corners down. Presto instant shelter.
I also carry top+bottom rain gear. I prefer not to hike w/ a pancho on   
but
do like the multi functionality of it.
