Obscure factoid:
There is an excellent book, "Merril's Marauders," written by Charlton
Ogburn, that describes the WW II exploits of this famous unit. However,
another book by the same author, "The Southern Appalachians: A
Wilderness Quest," includes descriptions of several hikes along the A.T.
(circa mid-sixties) and provides a fine overview of the region.
