[at-l] Trail Names

Hi,

I'm doing research on AT trail names and I'm hoping someone can give me some
help. I'd like to know two things.

First, and most importantly, does anyone know anything about the origin of
the trail names on the AT? When did the practice begin? Who started it? That
sort of thing.

Secondly, if anyone has a trail name with an interesting pedigree, I'd like
to hear about that too.
