[at-l] Hikin in the Heat

I'm no Doctor and don't play one on TV or the internet.

However, I suggest you see an asthma specialist.

About ten years ago I did. I went to an allergy / asthma specialist. He
pegged me as stress related asthmatic. Since then, I have been on a
preventive regiment and carry an inhaler for attacks and my life has been far
easier.

For 45 year I had had a variety if respiratory problems -- lots of bronchitis,
coughing, pneumonia, etc.; yet no general practitioner had spotted it because
I did not have a significant wheeze and by the time I got to their office the
attack was long gone.

I have never had the first sign of asthma, though I am allergic (skin) to
several things. However, in both trips out to northern Arizona & southern
Utah, I had some asthma symptoms. About day 14 of our trip, at the south rim
of the Grand Canyon, I awoke about 4:00 a.m., in the tent, doing what I
described to my doc at home as "double breathing." I was taking a normal
breath and then kind of pulling for more air about half way through the
breath. I finally got up, got into the front seat of the car, and dozed
upright until it got light. I don't think it was altitude because we'd been
at higher altitudes throughout our trip. I'd even done a little hike at over
10,000 feet.

I would also experience this kind of breathing randomly as we drove from
national park to national park. While driving, it was a kind of every 15
minute thing; that night in the tent, it was every breath for a while. My doc
at home said it was symptomatic of asthma.

It was NOT a big wildfire year, though they were doing some prescribed burning
at the north rim of the Grand Canyon. I never even smelled smoke at the south
rim.

Maybe all that dry air is hard on gals with lungs used to breathing water!

I have never had heat hit me anywhere like here in the West. I just cannot
breath or get water enough to drink. I find it so frustrating as it seems like
my asthma continually bothers me.
