Along the Appalachian Trail? Depends on how and where they are hidden
and your definition of 'trace', I suppose.

Restored fire pits, cat holes and the like may be spotted the trained
eye if you know where to look, but are generally considered 'No Trace'
if done properly. Is a container hidden from view similar?

Then there's the possibility that a letterbox or geocache could be
placed in the vicinity of a shelter or other structure along the trail.
If a container is hidden underneath, would it really matter even if
someone spotted it? Would the sight destroy their enjoyment more than
the building does?

Should we be sweating the small stuff?
