[at-l] Re: Earl Shaffer

If Earl didn't want a shelter (or anything else) named after him while he was
alive, then it seems to me if would not be considerate to name something
after him now that he's gone. But since he is not with us anymore, his
brother John would be the one to make the decision. Many people saw the
"grumpy old man" but I remember seeing Earl in the middle of a group of
young hikers, laughing and telling stories to an admiring audience. He was
at that moment the young hiker who hiked in '48. I've felt that magic. When
I'm on the trail I forget my age, I'm suddenly young, beautiful and athletic.
That day he was no longer 80 but that handsome young man who hiked the trail
over 50 years ago.
