[at-l] Taking mom hiking

Think mid-May, early June in the south. Late August, early September in the
north to avoid extremes of weather. Most people who can walk can do three-four
mile days.

Think about backpacking two or three miles to a destination where you can set up
camp and day hike for a day or two or three, rather than backpacking several
days in a row.

Think also about carrying as little as possible. But don't skimp on camp wear,
rain gear and camp comfort. We eventually learn to cope with the cold and wet.
But that takes time and experience for older folks. Us youngsters need to break
them in gradually.
