Expect snow and ice and sub freezing temperatures for the first six weeks with a
mid March start in Georgia. Maine will be beautiful with a mid September end.
Expect below freezing at least some nights, but serious snow and ice are rare.

An anniversary ending sounds like a great idea. But I wouldn't push too hard to
achieve it. The excellent hiking season continues at least another two weeks in
the Maine mountains and on Katahdin -- and many thru hikers have manages to
climb Katahdin as late as Nov. 1 -- though new Baxter Park regulations make post
Oct. 15 ascents more difficult.
