[*] I have a friend who used to catch pogies for the Soviets
back in the late 80s. They claimed it was for animal feed (yeah,
that's the ticket). Anyway, his boat sank one day and he wound
up being an unexpected guest on their ship. He said afterwards
that they were really heavy drinkers -- go figure.

Before he was dropped off in port, they gave him a flag and a
coffee table book about the Soviet Union. From what I browsed
in the latter, they were really big on farm tractors and nubile
young girls holding placards which formed a mosaic of Andropov.
Yet, in spite of that, today they're too lame to even keep a
high-tech Kondor Legion at bay.

You don't realize what you had until you've lost it.
