My 2 cents.
I've just recently returned from doing the first 1984.2
miles of the PCT armed only with the Guide Book, Data Book
and compass.
Rarely did I even bother with the guidebook, mostly, I
just used the data book. I found navigating incredibly
easy, even in the pervasive snow of the Sierra's during
the first 2 weeks of June. Only on 3 occasions did I take an 'unscheduled d=
etour', soley because I wasn't paying
attention. I only used a compass when ensuring correct map
orientation.
In my opinion, GPS on the PCT is totally unnecessary.
:)
