Yes, take a camera. These days you can get weather resistant cameras from
Pentax, Canon and probably others. You can get a camera that will date your
photos for you so if all you keep is a mileage log you'll be able to figure
out where the photo was taken. If you're concerned about weight check out
the APS cameras. They aren't good for really big enlargements but the Canon
Elph for example is smaller than a pack of cigarettes (and a lot
healthier). By all means take a camera. Record the views, the folks you
hiked with, the places you stayed and the totally unexpected things you'll
always remember even without a photo but need proof of when telling the
stories.
