If you stick close to the trail, most of your "town stops" along the
southern quarter will be rather alternative...not really in towns at
all. I realized this before I hit the trail and knew I didn't want to
count on hitching or shuttling to get what I needed. I included "town
food" (dinner and breakfast) in my maildrop. I sent things I wouldn't
normally get to eat on the trail, such as a can of clam chowder, so I
wouldn't get too bored. If I got a chance for something better, my other
food went into the hiker box. (Wesser/NOC and Hot Springs are glowing
exceptions.)
