RE: [at-l] Gear Question;BackPack

Chuck writes >>I am looking for a backpack, reasonably
priced, for my son, 14 years old and 110 pounds, to do a 12 day
expedition (Philmont) this July. Problems are he will grow between now
and then and Philmont gives us 4 days of food at a time so our pack
weights are normally 45-55 pounds each.<<

		Chuck,

At this age you want to keep the weight down to make the
trip enjoyable. The choice between internal and external is a personal
question. However I'd keep the size down to around 3200 cubic inches for
an external or 4200 cubic inches for an internal.

The Kelty pack at a bit over $100 from REI is a great
first pack. My son used one on our 700 mile trek on the AT in 97. He was
13 at the time. We never packed more than 30 pounds in it at a time. In
fact we kept all our packs down in the 25# range. I expect we'll use it
again this summer on our two week journey on the John Muir trail.
