Last year as I approached the Smokies the local police were searching for
someone they wanted to interrogate in connection with some murders he had been
talking about.  I was very upset about being in the vicinity and feeling kinda
vulnerable.     Even though I had two partners at the time and the shelters
were full enough to require lots of hikers tenting in the vicinity of the
shelter, I sometimes found myself hiking alone throughout the day.  After
about 40 or 50 miles into the Smokies I completely forgot about any danger and
only saw the absolute beauty of the place.  I hope this year's group have the
same experience of peace and beauty of GSMNP.   I think you should always keep
alert to your surroundings as well as your gut feelings, but if you are so
afraid that you feel it necessary to carry ANY kind of weapon - then you
should yellow blaze around that area and go back to it at a later time.  Or
maybe even do something else besides backpacking.
