I remember that night very well, Frank. I thought "Who the heck does this
gut think he is telling my kid where he can and can't smoke?" But, to be
honest, me and the now estranged Mrs. were just too damned drunk to care.
Anyway, that was Dickie Ray Bob. He was 12 at the time (teenage here in
Indiana). Just before you got there, Dickie Ray Bob and his brother,
Billy Ray Bob, were fighting over which is a better smoke: Pall Malls or
non-filter Camels. When I was a young lad, still at my mother's teat
(about 8 or 9), I started smoking Lucky Strikes. I thought it was
wonderful that the boys felt so strongly about something, so as to
defend it with their blood. If all goes well, Dickie Ray Bob will be home
for Christmas '98. Seems it's getting harder and harder to defend
hot-wiring a police car in southern Indiana. Beaurocrats. I swear the car
was on fire when we got there.

Bill, good point. I plan to try these out next time we have a freeze up
here. The way this fall is going that should be in about a week. I plan
to fashion an enclosure of some sore, maybe from a fleece top and try to
dry some clothes. If these packets put out enough heat to dry socks and
keep boot from freezing then I think it will be a joy to pack them out
with the candy wrappers and such. Hopeful

Gypsy, the iodine tables dissolve slowly if the water is cold. Do the
vitamin C tablets also dissolve slow? Can you crush up them easily?

Campmor has both kinds of chemical heat packs, plus a hand warmer which
burns some kind of solid fuel. Most "outdoor" stores have them, especially
those which sell hunting equipment. I've also seen them in K and Wal Marts.

The single-use heat packs in my EMT kit came from Galyan's in Indianapolis,
two for 79 cents. They are about 2 x 3 x 1/8 inch, maybe 1.5 oz. each.

1. Open package and expose to air. (No kneading or shaking required).
2. This warmer is meant to be used in an enclosed area such as a pocket or
   glove.
3. Heater will maintain a comfortable temperature at a minimum 104F (40C)

Lexan bottles full of hot water are great warmers, but these devices could
be very nice inside wet boots in cold weather.

I beleive hat Mike hit it on the head: Pot is illegal. PERIOD.

Concerning winter walking, anyone have a comparison between instep crampons
and the "STABILIZERS"? I just picked up a pair of the stabilizers and while
I have never used the instep crampons, plan to use the stabilizers this
weekend. My hunch is that the stabilzers would be more appropriate for trail
walking since they allow you to walk fairly normally.

I cut a tab in half, and then broke off small pieces off the half (I used
approx 1/6 of a tab per liter). I didn't try to crush it, just dropped it in
and shook the bottle a few times. Just like the commercial neutralizer
tablets the vitamin C seemed to dissolve and it cleared up the water almost
instantly. If it was really cold and part of the tablet didn't dissolve
immediately I didn't worry about it as long as the water cleared up and
tasted good. If you can find the commercial product it's probably easier
because you don't have to cut or measure - just drop one in the bottle. But
I ran out when I was at Erwin, TN and a local pharmacist told me about the
Vit. C.

It amazes me that most humans are still so socially unevolved as to
think in terms of "legal" vs "illegal." There are countless numbers of
"legal" actions that I would never commit, just as there are countless
numbers of "illegal" actions that I don't even blink before committing.

Let's all remember that at one time slavery was legal and many
religions were not. Can you hear Martin Luthor King saying, "The bottom

"Christianity is illegal. That is enough deterrent for me."

For those that can't grasp the big picture, focus on a smaller on:

This thread seems to have elements of smelly bottles, winter camping, and
iodine purification. I'd like to raise a caution about using iodine in the
winter. Much of what I've read says that the effectiveness of iodine drops
off significantly in very cold water. In (literally) ice water I wonder if
it works very well at all.

Since iodine is iffy in very cold weather, and since filters freeze up,
most winter campers I talk to just rely on boiling their water.

By the way, when melting snow, the preferred method seems to be to always
add snow to liquid water to avoid burning holes in your pots. One trick is
to never finish off the last of your water... keep it as a starter for the
next batch. Also, don't use the "pink" snow that smells like watermellon.

Disclaimer: I'm just getting interested in winter camping, but am definitly
not an expert.

I kept turning over in the shelter, trying to avoid that awfull stench
until I realized that it was coming from me. I supose that the nose gets
numb to it eventually, but it sure felt good to scrape a bit of the grease
off my skin & clothes. It surpises me how much thru hikers differ in the
amount of effort they're willing to expend to stay clean. One friend
washed and shaved just about each day, all the way to Katadin. Others were
intent on never washing. In the summer I sweat quite a bit, so I'll wash
more often if there's water available. It's hard to pass up a nice deep
creek!

What type cooking pot did you use? I could not get the Trioxane to heat
water in a stainless steel canteen cup. The burn time was too short;
five to seven minutes.

Chuck,

I used a 0.9 liter Evernew stainless pot. I placed it on top of two
bricks which were on a cinderblock. I used aluminum foil as a
windshield. My burn time for 2/3 bar was ~12 minutes. I wonder if the
restricted airflow from the foil windshield helped to slow the burn and
increase burn time. I also live at 5000ft, so my boiling point is lower.

In my first experiment with triox, I used a small can cut to ~2 inches
in height with a few small vents. Burn time was incredibly long (over
20 minutes), and the heat output was poor. The water never boiled.

I have been told that there may be some variation in burn times based on
the manufacturer and age of the fuel tabs, but 50% seems like a lot.

The trioxane bars I have had a waxy component. I wonder if the bars had
been exposed to high heat and the wax separated out. The wax quickly
ignited and set the remaining material aflame.

3 tabs of Hexamine did not perform nearly as well. Water barely reached
170 degrees. I have tried several different manufacturers with similar
results.

cheers,
twn

I asked the same question when I bought my instep crampons and the
person at REI who waited on me said the instep crampons were more
appropriate for the trail. He said he had both the Stablicers and the
insteps and his preference was the instep. I took his advice and wasn't
disappointed. He did say the Stablicers were good, however.

Jim,

I just got back from a winter hike. Used iodine in lieu of my Sweetwater
filter. I learned my lesson in 96 about using a filter in cold weather.
1) It's a hassle, 2) Filter freezes up, 3) Hands get cold pumping and
messing with wet hoses, etc.

It's been 5 days since my hike and I don't have giardia, so the iodine
must have worked. I just followed the directions on the bottle and
waited 20 minutes or more after treating the water. I also took a chance
and drank directly from a spring at Big Spring shelter. The water was
coming directly out of the mountain and a guy from the Nantahala Hiking
Club doing trail maintenance there said he'd never been sick from it. I
normally don't take chances on water, but this water didn't have a
chance to be contaminated.

Of course, we boiled our water for cooking.
