[at-l] Springer in February

Hello
Name is Jon native of Atlanta,GA ( 30yrs)
Feb is typically cold, rainey. You can expect snow, ice. I have never
seen snow AFTER March but can't rember a year that it didn't snow some
where
in NGA during March. Snow accumulation is usually in the 2-4 inch range
Temps do not typically go below 10 deg and rarely stay in the teens for
very long. I also lived for 3 yrs in the mtns and it does get very cold
at night. Freezing rain is the biggest problem.
Unpredictable weather is very descriptive of Feb and March.
Expect something like this:
60 deg at the begining of the week with 4-5 inches of rain in the middle
of the week with
20 deg weekend. I remember a week last this last year. I live south of
Atlanta in the country and for the last 3 yrs sometime during Feb 40 feet
of my drive gets flooded for 1-2 days due to rising creek it crosses.
I am not saying not to start in Feb...just be prepared for freezing temps
and rain and snow and nice 60 deg days.
200+ yrs ago the Creeks and Cherrokee Indians lived in these mtns year
around. They
didn't have gortex, down, polypropylene, stoves, etc.
I have considered starting my hike in Feb to beat the crowded shelters of
spring.
