I wouldn't expect nails to be a problem with a trail dog. They should
be kept ground pretty well down and blunt after a week or so. If your
dog is anything like the dogs I've seen on the trail, it will be
covering at least twice the miles you'll hike each day.

My brother used to run his Alaskan husky down gravel roads several
times a week, and I don't believe that he needed to add anything
to protect his tent floor. Then again, he wasn't using a particularly
lightweight tent.
