I worried before my thru hike about what the dog's nails would do to the tent
floor. It turned out to be no problem - when I set up the tent I put my
thermarest on one side and Smoky's blue foam pad (which I had cut to about
2/3 of it's original size) on the other side. His pack went in the back of
the tent behind my pad, and my pack was in back of his pad. There was no
available floor space for his nails to damage. So set it all up before you
go and you will probably save yourself the weight of a space blanket or floor
covering.
