Re: [at-l] Boots

David:

Let me share my experience with selecting boots. I don't believe there is
any one particular boot that is right for everyone. I started with a cheap
Vasque boot that became soaked the first day out and resulted in massive
blisters and ultimately ended that hike.

So, I figured more expensive boots would be better. I tried Asolo, Merrill,
and a couple others, all with the same results. Blisters.

Finally, a fellow hiker recommended Salamon boots. I have now gone through
two pairs and am using a third, and have NEVER had a blister with them.

Why? Well, it's not necessarily the name of the boot or the cost (although
$150 buys quality), but I think it is the last (a metal form) that is used in
making the boot. This particular boot just happens to fit my foot better or
visa versa.

I have learned that various manufacturers use different size lasts to produce
a given boot size, there are differences. The scenario I went through was
necessary until I found the boot that fit my feet and did not cause
friction/blisters.

So, buy and wear various brands of boots until you find one that fits and
doesn't cause blisters, then stick with it, even if its a Kmart Special. Be
sure also, that you break-in the boots before you put a heavy pack on your
back and head for the ridges.

If you are concerned that this could be an expensive process, it does not
have to be. Just buy from a reputable outlet that guarantees satisfaction.
I have bought four pairs of boots in the past five years, trying to find the
right boot for me. I bought them all from REI. I wear them until they are
broken-in, and if they hurt, I take them back and exchange them for a new
pair of some other manufacturer. They are really good about their guarantee
of "satisfaction" and never question my returns.

Good luck.
