[at-l] hiking off of Katahdin

Has anyone hiked off of Katahdin in any other direction than the AT.  I know that there are other trails, but the guidebooks do not say much about them.  The approach trail to Springer is well used and well documented, why not the trails off of Katahdin?  It seems to me, by looking at the maps, that these trails would be good to use for getting off of Katahdin and on your way home.
