On the battery question, I'd probably carry the AA-size battery pack. AA
alkalines will hold a charge for many years, and are far more readily
available on the trail than an outlet (not that you'd bring the charger for
the NiCad battery anyway). Heck, you don't even need batteries. I usually
have a headlamp, for which I carry a spare set of AAs. Between the two, I
have enough for the phone.

I'm purposefully staying out of the debate over carrying the little beasts.
They are quite handy (much more so than a gun, IMHO), but I've done a fair
amount of testing in Virginia, and the coverage in the mountains is very
spotty. I'd sure hate to carry one for a few hundred or thousand miles, then
really _need_ it, and not have coverage.
