In general, I'd rather have at least one other (friendly)
hiker camping nearby, especially if I'm in a tent.
Even if the conversation lapses.

I guess I'm more gregarious than I was as a 20-something.

IIRC (and not surprising to me) the desire for complete
solitude is rare among R. Mueser's 1989 sample group.

Alone at night in the wild in a 3 lb. one-man tent, I think of
my place in the food chain... and that's not necessarily a
comforting train of thought.
