THAT'S WITH WIND CHILL included.
It was nearly zero at the top of Blood Mntn on Tuesday-Wednesday at night with wind chill included. I'm sure the Smokies were colder than that. Right now the WIND is gusting in the 50 mph range. Nearly knocked the car I was in off the road.
Best thing to do to sleep warm is hike AFTER you eat supper to get your body temp up and then put that hot-body (hmmmm, that sounds a bit risque, but you know what I mean) into your sleeping bag to warm the bag up. Then as the bag cools, you sleep.
Do NOT get cold before you go to bed. Sleeping bags that I have seen do not heat your body up like a heating blanket. Your body heats up the bag.
Wisdom from someone who got hypothermia once and doesn't backpack when the temps go below 35* at night.
