My continuing point is that this is a natural thing and has been for millions of years.
We cannot impose our will without the worst possible consequences.
Leave it alone.

  Actually the delta is Wyoming washed down the river. The mountains in
  Wyoming were at one point 60,000 feet high, they eroded down and the remains
  are the delta plus a good bit of Mississippi surrounding states.

  I'm from what I consider the Real Mississippi Delta, the area in Mississippi
  from Memphis to Vicksburg, from the Mississippi River inland about 60 miles
  to Greenwood.  That was formed, pre-levees, by centuries of annual flooding.
  That's cotton land, flat as a table top.  Gorgeous stuff.  anklebear
