A Year Ago Today...

...this sun was blazing, not clouding up and spitting due to 
Hurrincane Charley. We were in the amazing White Mountains of new 
Hampshire, in our first sunny weather in a looooong time. And where 
better to have it than in these fabulous, open peaks?

We had friends waiting. Lister Art "Gabby" Cloutman had walked the ten 
miles up to Zealand Hut to fetch us down the mountain.

Then he took us to my most esteemed transcriber's house, the proud 
AT-lister Suz "spike" Buchannan. Suz is on her own distance hike right 
in the Cohos. A little pre-marriage "walkabout."

Suz continued to fetch us and house us all through the Whites.
Once again, I am very grateful to them and this list (many of you, 
often, through e-mails, cards and packages) for the support during 
that amazing time that was last year.

Of that day, I wrote:
"Once again, my buddy Art has rescued us from the wilderness. He even 
drives us by Subway, where we chow down. Then he drives us to the 
house of our hostess for the night: my transciber Suz.

"I've been looking forward to this visit for a long time. Suz is an 
Episcopal priest, a single mom of near-grown children, a strong and 
avid hiker and just an all-around good gal. She's the reason these 
entries get posted so quickly, and spell-checked (and, sometimes, 
deciphered). She just spent her Minnesota vacation in the hospital 
having a mega-stone worked thru her kidney plumbing. Now she opens her 
lovely home to us. She's a brick! Except that she laughs at how we go 
down her stairs.
