[at-l] What do you use as rain gear?

You got it upside down if it collects water. Cut slits for the pack straps
and slip the bag down over the backpack (top of backpack first). Pull the
pack straps out the slit, then pull the waist belt thru the slit. If you are
using a garbage bag, you probably have enough bag hangin' below your
backpack to tie the corners loosely together to keep it from blowing. You
still will get water flowing down you back, but it shouldn't pool and add
the extra weight.

I prefer the smaller, tougher trash compactor bags. I find them in grocery
stores, Costco, Wal-Mart, and prolly even big drug stores. The trash
compactor bags weigh an ounce more, but will last the whole trail unless you
start bushwhacking.

We used ponchos on the AT and had them to cover our backpacks. We stuffed
the hood and edges of the poncho around the packs when we wanted to cover
the packs but not wear the poncho. Like someone else said keep your sleeping
gear and a set of clothes dry. We look at that as a safety issue. (From
someone who experienced hypothermia first hand.)
