Yup. I doubt the same machine. But certainly a vaguely similar machine. I can go
to a glass store tomorrow and buy "ground glass." It won't look much like your
camera lens.

 When the plastic lens of my eye glasses in '93 was etched by contact with DEET,
 I spent hours on the trail trying to polish away the blur. The lens just got
 worse. I found that grinding is easy. Polishing a lens is complex.
