a loong time ago in a country on the other side of the planet (to me)
ryan once posted

>If a large percentage of list members would prefer that the list be
>actively kept on topic, then send me an email indicating this.
(see http://www.backcountry.net/arch/at/0212/msg00916.html )

and we had a vote, which ryan answered....
(ryans post attached at the bottom for reading..)

after the vote, the OT and garbage seemd to die down somewhat,
but now its back in full force.

i've enjoyed my time here but now i'm leaving. (will
set myself to vacation so i dont have to go through
the whole process all over again if ever i rejoin closer
to next year...)

i'll stick to hanging on the two AT2004 hiker lists on
yahoo groups, so I can get ready for next year for my thru.

heaven forbid, someone post anything interesting, i'm sure
the people on the 'AT2004@yahoogroups.com' and
'ATHikers2004@yahoogroups.com' groups would appreciate it.

i leave at 6:30am for work, get home at 7pm after fighting london
tubes, the last thing i want to do is process 120+ AT-L emails a day
removing all the ot garbage, american politics (as a londoner,
i've zero interest;) and virus warnings and such (they are more
annoying than the viruses themselves!), wasting what little time I
have left tomyself in the evenings. i'm on several lists of
different + non-hiking kinds (stuff for work etc), and right
now the AT-L is of the least important to me.

it has been great, but not worth the aggro or loss of my time
to filter it to find a few posts with nuggets of info.

i'll probably unvacation at the end of the year when i'm in
final prep mode for leaving.

thanks peeps! happy hiking.

    * Subject: [at-l] AT-L vote results (admin)

Okay folks, here are the results- I figure there's been a number of
digests since my request for comments and the incoming email has really
tapered off.

The "keep it like it is" people numbered 43.

The "actively moderate it" people numbered 17.

(note that some folks didn't want it moderated, just kept on topic- but
I counted their votes in the latter category).

If someone wants to audit these results I suppose we could work
something out- but I don't think it's fair to publish everyone's
comments since they were made in private.

Two people made a very strong case for folks to add "OT" to the subject
of off-topic posts so people could automatically filter out these messages.

Another person pointed out that personal attacks are definitely off-topic.

Yet another pointed out that off-topic posts/flame wars/etc. damage the
good content on the list by dilution.

Someone actually requested Felix post more. This may have been a plant.

Splitting the lists into "Campfire" and "On-topic" was recommended by
two people.

Another made a case that if people showed a bit of self-control
(5-minute rule, etc.) there would be a lot less garbage. Do it for the
good of the list.

And lastly, a case was made for re-examining the FAQ issue, w/o
discussing WF.

No hanging Ryans.

With these results, I will make a few updates to the web page and pretty
much keep things as they are on the list. As a side note, I found out
that I'm being let go from my job tommorrow, so I'll have more time to
work with the list.

Regards,

R
