Sorry. I should have mentioned shelter. A tarp or a cheap tent are also needed.
Sears was selling a good tent, though a couple of pounds too heavy, this very
day for $26+.

 Yes there is more sophisticated -- and much more expensive -- gear available,
 that will save you two or three pounds of weight on your back, but which will
 truly have no impact on whether you eventually reach Katahdin or not. It's
 become a cliche, but the trail is truly more of a psychological than a physical
 challenge. To spend six months not doing all the things that American culture
 has trained us to do, is truly a shock, which only a few -- about 15% at last
 count -- can overcome.
