[at-l] where do I find help?

Also, Linda, if you haven't yet purchased a lot of gear and
are thinking of pursuing backpacking as a regular outdoor
activity (on the Appalachian Trail or other areas), you
should consider getting the combined weight of your tent
(including poles, stakes, groundcloth and fly), backpack
(empty) and your sleeping bag (in the stuff sack) to be
under a combined weight of 10 lbs.

If you're a lightweight body person (say a 110 lb woman)
you'll want to be as far under 10 lbs as possible so you're
not weighed down so much with your backpack.

You'll be miles ahead if it turns out you end up doing
quite a bit of backpacking in the future.
