The damage from not using the straps is not anything you will be able to quickly
see. The living parts of a tree are the conduits that carry nutrients to and
from the roots. These conduits run just under the bark. Pressure on the bark can
damage these conduits. But it's a gradual process. The damage may not show up
for years and even then it may not appear to have a direct link to the improper
use of hammocks, but rather as premature death of the trees, or unexplained
pockets of decay.
