Dan,

The approach trail is about 9 miles - do you have any idea how long it takes
you to hike? I am a slow hiker and by the end of the day I end up having gone
about 1 1/5 miles an hour by the time I factor in breaks, etc. Given this,
the hike takes about 6 hours. BUT....the first mile is tough if you aren't
used to hiking with your pack -it's straight up. If you want to do the
approach trail but are really worried about the miles, consider having your
ride drop you off by the lodge and skipping that first mile. Or, plan to do
it as an overnight and do the 7 miles to Black Gap Shelter or stop earlier
than that and camp on top of Frosty mountain. (just be aware of water
sources) and then go to Springer on day two. There's all sorts of
possibiliites. No stressing allowed!
