When I started my Thru-hike in 2001 I planned to go slow and take it easy at
the start. I was in average condition but a slow hikker. I left from the
lodge at 0900 and my plan was to spend my first night at Black Gap, then go
up to Springer the next AM. Well, I reached Black Gap by around 1:30 PM ,
had lunch, and sat around getting bored for about an hour. So I decided to
go ahead up to Springer. It was 85 degrees that day and no shade, but I was
on Springer about an hour later. Record heat that day, but it snowed a week
later. Anyway it took me a total of about six hours of hiking time going
slow.
