Black bears don't hibernate, they sort of take extended naps, and wake up to
feed and wander a bit all winter.

Yup, it's the shorter days and the falling temps that key denning.

In Maine and Quebec, Black Bears den up from November to March. I think it's
not much different for NJ bears.
