[at-l] Katahdin Reservation Info

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]
Baxter State Park will begin processing reservations for the upcoming camping
season on January 2, 2003. Mail order and in person only, no reservations via
phone. Camping season starts May 15th, but the AT might not be open. You
should be able to climb Katahdin by June 1st, after the MATC does some trail
work and Park Rangers inspect the trail to Baxter Peak.
Fees have increased this year. $8 per person, $16 min per site. Out of state
vehicles will pay $10 at the gates, Maine residents drive in for free.
Southbound and Flip-flopping thruhikers are not allowed to stay at the AT
lean-tos at The Birches. You must have a reservation, and you'll want to stay
at Katahdin Stream Campground. The AT passes right through KSC. Tent site #
19 is the quietest, tent site #16 is the first/last campsite on the AT, and
walk-in lean-tos #1-2-3 are my favorites.
Flip-Floppers please note: When you get to the ATC at Harper's Ferry you can
call ahead to Baxter to inquire about open spots. I suggest planning a
midweek stay at Baxter, staying at least two nights. You can mail your
reservation request & check ahead, and have it mailed to a maildrop (allow
three weeks). Or, you could just flip ahead to Millinocket and take your
chances on reservations at Park Head Quarters!
