Last week I had asked for lister's favorite discount outfitter store locati=
ons and rcvd fewer responses than I had thought would be forthcoming. Anyh=
ow, a compilation of the responses that did come in is listed below. (Some=
how we seemed to fixate on a trip I am making to Princeton, NJ.) If you hav=
e others to add, please do so.

It might be interesting to simply ask for your favorite outfitter - nevermi=
nd the discount or outlet store limitation...

And, since we have listers from all over, we don't need to limit ourselves =
to NJ and/or VA.

Al (Draggin' Anchor)

~~~If you will be coming up 26 through NC at all, you have to hit Diamond B=
rand outfitters in Naples, NC.  Thats exit 13 off of 26 and you go south on=
 25 about a half miles. The store is on the left. Be sure to check the clea=
rance racks.http://www.diamondbrand.com/
~~~Campmor ( www.campmor.com ) has good prices and a lot of specials, and S=
ierra Trading Post seems to carry mostly discontinued stuff, they are on th=
e web but I don't recall the URL, check google. Sierra has highly variable =
stock and if you see something you want you better call them asap otherwise=
 it could be gone.

~~~I've found Target discount stores to be sources of clothing, polypro stu=
ff especially at good prices they also carry an eccentric variety of hiking=
 supplies that you should check out.
~~~Princeton is about 1.5, 2 hours from CAMPMOR (in Paramus)... Up route 1 =
& the Parkway. But worth the trip..And there IS an EMS next door. They eve=
n give an additional discount to members of local trail clubs, which won't =
help you, but I use it all the time. One other thing -- there's no sales t=
ax on clothing in NJ. They always have returned items and 'seconds' on sale=
 that aren't listed in catalogs or online because they're one of a kind.

~~~As you head toward Princeton, stop by I. Goldberg, 902 Chestnut St, Phil=
adelphia, PA.  Lots of standard stock but also lots of discontinued stuff w=
ith good prices as well.
~~~However there is a Orvis outlet in Salem VA -- they have a shipping faci=
lity in the area. It is hit-or-miss, as they sell discontinued/odd size/re=
turned items.

~~~Outfitters at Harper's Ferry - great family run store; great town; good =
selection and they'll go out of their way to help
~~~Blue Ridge Outdoors - stores in Roanoke and Blacksburg,VA . . . Bill Wil=
son, the manager of the Roanoke store gave a number of us 2001 hikers a rid=
e all the way from there down to Trail Days

~~~I agree re Campmor - awesome catalogs, awesome web site, great prices, a=
wesome stores!
~~~there's a thorlo outlet in the strip mall at the intersection of 40 and =
77 in Statesville, NC. they usually have pretty good prices (1/2 to 1/3 no=
rmal price and if you buy 12 pair, you get a 13th free.)

~~~While in Dallas area look up Mountain Hideout.  They have a very good se=
lection and most of it is discounted, some as much as 40%.
