If I were buying a tent right now, I'd strongly consider the Nomad 2+2,
room enough for 2 with weight and price similar to the one person
tents. It has more than ample room - although for winter hiking I like
the smaller volume early Nomad tent.

BTW, you can certainly afford a solo tent and a tarp.
