About the age of 10 I put on my winter boots one January morning. When they came
off  that  evening  I  found  a  squished  mouse stuck to my stocking. I've been
checking ever since.

I felt terribly sad to think I had killed that "poor little mouse." I especially
kept up the checking habit when I spent three months in the desert of Arizona --
land of those equally cute scorpions.
