Perhaps it's the illusive "Acer psendoplananus" AKA Sycamore Leaf Maple.
This nonindigenous species grows widely in SW Va. The sapling are often
striped grey and green. If you were where you shouldn't be, I'd say it
might be a Mallorn, they grow a little farther of there. Don't they Red?
