[at-l] snake identification
Hi t.
Recently, a co-worker described a snake that's been hanging around his yard. He wanted to identify it, and I found a key for snake ID for Florida. http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/natsci/herpetology/FL-GUIDE/onlineguide.htm Then click on "Key to Identification" on left.
I also found a key for SC: http://www.neoperceptions.com/scra/ident/index.htm Just go to one of the protocols to go through the key. (www.snakesandfrogs.com might also have good info for birds and mammals. I didn't check it out yet though.)
Here's NC: http://www.bio.davidson.edu/Biology/herpcons/Herps_of_NC/snakes/herp_key/Pages/keyhome.htm Click on "Start Identifying" on the left.
NY: http://www.cortland.edu/herp/keys/snakekey.htm
There were keys for other states too. It seems many of the sites are from herpetology departments at colleges or universities, so you could try that route as well.
Of course, you could ask here, as someone else mentioned. If none of the above help, perhaps posting to www.nature.net "Name this animal" would.
Happy snake hunting,
T
