OT: ;-) IF YOU DON'T HAVE BACON (WAS) RE: [at-l] A.T. book

Actually a friend of mine (doing her library internship) found a whole
WHOPPER in a book while inventorying a HS's collection. Just one bite taken
out. She tossed the burger. Proves she wasn't a hiker. And I've found
some interesting things. Including one unused condom: it still was in the
wrapper. An earring. And a stick of gum. I've heard one lady found a
thong in an oversized book. And one person told me they found a doobie in
either Abbie Hoffman's classic or THE MONKEY WRENCH GANG (I forget which).
Ain't Library work grand?! ;-)

Can't remember if this book has been mentioned before. I just discovered
it in the library here at FSU..."Walking in the Clouds" by Elmer C. Adams
published in 1939. It's about an August 1938 hike on the A.T., through
the Smokies. I think it's fascinating to read about conditions at that
time, and to read the equipment list in the Appendix--a list which has
items such as hatchet, tinned corn beef hash, wire gridiron, frying pan,
two kettles, egg beater, nails, etc. I've just ordered a used copy of
it, and the cheapest one available was $6.95 if anyone's interested.
There are 28 libraries in the U.S. with copies, so Interlibrary Loan is
an option (for those of us who don't use bacon as bookmarks! VBG).
Y'all enjoy.
