FWIW, there are plenty of folks out there who think the WF explanation 
misses a much larger truth.

Think of the recent critisism surrounding writer Doris Kerns Goodwin.  Some 
people will choose to focus on how she f%*d-up.  Others will simply 
celebrate her contributions (No Ordinary Time remains a must read). Perhaps 
the most wise of all will do both.

Same thing holds true for Wingfoot.  On balance he has helped and inspired a 
great many people.  He has done some good things for the Trail.  Truth be 
known, most of the contemporaneous critisism directed towards WF had more to 
do with his outspoken opinions on things, than the man.  Of course, others 
may disagree.

Also keep in mind that its something of a sport to have the last word on WF. 
  Having said something positive, I am quite certain that a specific 3 
posters on this list will respond with escallating nastyness with facts 
about why he is to be despised.  Its almost funny because it is so 
predictable.
