Just a bit to add to all Jan's good information--
When meeting horses:
Please move slowly and quietly while speaking soothingly. Any jumping around or flailing about is apt to make a bad situation worse.
If you take off a back with a big flourish and a loud plunk, it might be scary too. Easy does it.
Joan--who in the 1970's did horseback pack trips in Wyoming----and whose half thoroughbred/half Clydesdale at home apparently thought it was funny spook at EVERYTHING--and who will have neck surgery March 25 to get rid of bone spurs that are the result of one of those falls
