You missed my point completely. Other than the fact that a person shot
three times, how in the world would you know to interpret gun shots as a
distress signal? I would always respond to anyone in distress, and
would always interpret someone blowing a whistle as a distress signal,
even if they didn't know the 3 blow distress call.
Let's be practical. Gun shots in the woods, even 3 at a time, would
have to be repeated several times before almost anyone would interpret
it as a distress signal, and then be able to locate the person in need
of help. A whistle would be interpreted as a distress signal the first
time, and could be repeated regularly (without reloading) until someone
heard and located the person in distress.
