This is getting a bit off topic, but it doesn't seem to be
over.  You can check Unisys' website if you like (they're the
owners).  Also check out burnallgifs.org .  It's biased, as
you can tell by the name, but nevertheless has info.

Going by Unisys' website, it seems like you might be able
to write gifs legally with microsoft software, but the verbiage
didn't really make it clear to me.

Anyway, enough with the boring technical legal stuff.
