[at-l] altimeter

>>Have you considered GPS?

Yes, I have been considering it for a long time and several people have
tried to talk me into it. But I've always leaned away from it and have now
decided that I won't get one for the CDT. I'd like to be able to navigate
through remote off-trail environments in such a way that I am not reliant on
the continuing functionality of modern gadgetry flying high above. Of
course, one could argue that we also rely on magnetic north remaining
stable, and the shelves being stocked with food when we get into town, which
is true. I just feel that the map and compass route is the kind of
self-sufficiency I would prefer, and for most CDT hikers I have talked to,
GPS makes a significant difference only a few times over the course of a
thru-hike, and lots of people report great success without it. Additionally,
when I said that I "need" a new altimeter, that was perhaps a poor word
choice.
