I suspect the survey may have considered hours spent on the trail. A day hiker rarely is out for
more than 8 hours or so. thru hikers are on the trail 24 hours a day five or six days a week. That
would boost the trail hours by thru hikers to something in the range of 18 percent of all users,
perhaps.
